The Battle of Jutland 31st May 1916 - Order of Battle

Both commanders put to sea thinking that they would only be up against the opposing battle cruiser squadrons.

Admiral Sheer's plan was to lure the British battle cruisers under Beatty out of Rosyth. He wasn't aware that the Admiralty had intercercepted his radio transmissions and that the entire Grand Fleet would be assembled against him.

Admiral Jellicoe, the British commander in chief, had been informed by the Admiralty that Sheer, and his battleships, were still at Wilhelmshaven. It came as some surprise to him when they were reported at Jutland.
