The home of the Roman Soldier was a fort.
These forts varied in size depending on how many soldiers were stationed
there. This is a medium sized fort that was the base of a Cohort of about
500 Auxiliary troops.
The Legions were stationed at huge fortresses that could house over 5,000 men and their equipment. The three best known fortresses in Britain are at Chester, York and Caerleon.
All forts had a similar layout so somebody arriving at one for the first time would know their way around.
